The new Xbox One attempts to become a complete multimedia center, with voice and movement-controlled commands and the different devices and systems from Microsoft.
Today we were able to know some of the most important features and innovations of Microsoft’s new console, the Xbox ONE, a device which will be not only a game console, but also a complete center aiming to cover everything related with entertainment, introducing synchronization with Microsoft’s ecosystem, tablets, computers and mobile devices, being part of a whole entertainment network.
It will also include Kinect’s newest version, which can capture at 1080p and 60fps and will be able to detect movements much more precisely than the actual version, not to mention its voice recognition capabilities, which will open up a lot of new possibilities. During the presentation we could watch how the user can switch between different modes, such as TV, browser, games, etc, using real-time voice commands.
It will also include Skype as a messaging and communication center, which can be operated with Kinect itself.
Luckily, Microsoft has decided to show the design of the new Xbox, unlike the competition’s Playstation 4, which final design is still unknown. Its rectangular shape makes it look like a slightly oversized DVD player, and its black color will make it blend with everything else in your entertainment room.
As for the hardware, we know the basic specs: An eight-core processor, an AMD APU at 40 nm which the GPU includes, memory controller and sound card, 8 GB of RAM and a 500 GB HDD, and this time, Microsoft will be using a Blu-Ray optical drive. It will also feature optical input and output capabilities, USB 3.0 and support for Wi-Fi 802.11n with Wi-Fi Direct. It also shares its kernel with Windows 8, as well as the main interface. Three different operative systems will be included, one based in Windows 8 to download and run applications like Skype, Xbox own operative system to play games, and a third one to synchronize instant transmissions between the other two.
The controller’s design is clearly based on its antecessors, it goes back to being black-colored and there is a wider space between the left stick and the face buttons, which are distributed in a different way. There are also new buttons.
During the rest of the event, they showed content exclusive to the console, such as the development of a series based on the HALO universe, with the participation of none other than Steven Spielberg, or the agreement with NFL to gain exclusivity rights to retransmit sports events in the USA.
We could also see exclusive titles like Forza Motorsport 5, FIFA 14, NBA Live, EA Sports’ Madden NFL and UFC and Call of Duty. A brand new title called Quantum Break, from Remedy, the creators of Max Payne, was shown. Microsoft stated that out of the 15 exclusive launch titles, 8 will be completely new franchises.
The Xbox One console will arrive by the end of this year, but nothing has been said about the price. As Microsoft already announced, the presentation event will be complemented with another one directly from Los Angeles’ E3 during the next days, so we will be ready to know every detail about Microsoft’s new console.
