Nvidia has presented right now officially their new GeForce GTX 980M and GTX 970M. It was a launch that we expected for during few weeks, and this morning we knew some details thanks to the fact that MSI has introduced new laptops with these graphics cards.
The two new GPU with Maxwell architecture are at the top of the race of the performance graphics cards for laptops, being the GTX 980M the most powerful chip in the market today.
With this new generation, the company wanted to reduce the difference of performance compared with the desktop versions, in fact they insure that the difference between GTX 980 desktop and a GTX 980M is only 20%, something that we could guess when we saw the performance of the 860M, with this Maxwell architecture and the little difference concerning to the GTX 750 desktop.
GTX 980M has some reference specifications of 1536 CUDA cores with 28-nanometer Maxwell architecture running at 1038 MHz plus frequency boost that will depend on each laptop manufacturer. The memory of 4 GB base GDDR5 (there are models with more capacity), will operate at 2,500 MHz with a data bus of 256-bit.
Additionally, the GTX 970M remains in 1280 CUDA Cores and with 3GB of GDDR5 memory at 1250 MHz (5000 MHz) with a memory bus of 192-bit.
Both models support DirectX 12, besides CUDA, SLI, PhysX, GameStream, ShadowPlay, Battery Boost, GPU Boost and VXGI technologies. VXGI makes reference to the acronym "Voxel Global Illumination", a technology that allows to generate indirect lighting effects in reflections, transparencies, etc., in order to give a more realistic touch to the games.
It also had improved power management, making the performance in battery mode does not suffer a drastic reduction as before, but without renouncing a significant drop in consumption. We talk about going from 230W to 100W with a decrease of images per second acceptable that will allow keep playing in fluid way most of the games.
They will arrive in versions of 3, 4, 6 and 8 GB GDDR5 and it will integrated into various laptop gaming from several companies. A part of the MSI that we show you this morning, we have the ASUS G751 with the powerful GTX 980M, the Gigabyte Auros X7 with two GTX 970 M in SLI and Clevo P150 with a GTX 980M, this one we possibly see it in Spain renamed under the brand "Mountain".
