Review: Nvidia Geforce GTX 770 Benchmarks

Nvidia presents in one week the second high range card. More focused in an accessible price, high tight improvements and an surprising memory frequency.


Nvidia has updated its high range this weeks and the last one is the new Geforce GTX 770. A card that for 470 Dollars, somehow the actual price of the actual Geforce GTX 670, introduces interesting improvements such as a similar design found on higher models.

Technical Performance

We are back with Kepler of Nvidia, maybe the most prolific architecture of Nvidia from what we can remember. The new variant of this chip comes in the shape of 1536 shaders engines, exactly as the GTX 680, with a frequency superior than this last one and with a memory bus known for the usage of GDDR5 most fast memories until this date. Concretely 7gpbs of frequency to achieve the bandwidth of more than 220GB/s.

More GPU frequency, more memory frequency and more consumption than the GTX 680. Genuinely a maximum consumption of 230w that imposes the usage of two power cords, one of eight contacts and another one of six.

For the first time we can find a high range chip of Nvidia, maybe because in no longer so high, with two configurations of memory size. Concretely 2GB and 4GB like an option. This way Nvidia is capable of compensate the overprice of this type of high speed memory with an more economic entrance option of 2GB of frame buffer capacity.

The improvements position the new GTX 770 in a good place leaving the GTX 680 completely obsolete and not only because its outstanding memory bus of more than 224GB/s, a 15% more, but it also integrates the GPU Boost 2.0 technology that offers more hardware control and higher frequencies.

Just one of the improvements in this new card format is presented. The same design that we see in the GTX 780, the GTX or GTX 690 Titan. All the cards with superior prices and that have remarkable improvements in thermal management also have an unchangeable aspect with a much more elaborated fabrication quality that any other previous generation.

The design and the new surge frequency management for the ventilation turbine of the system, also the heat chamber disperser, achieves one surprisingly good results both in light and heavy charges and this makes the aluminum and acrylic finish look even more attractive.

The card counts with the habitual connectivity of this last models : two double link DVI ports, one HDMI 1.4 port and one Displayport 1.2 port. The card supports up to three monitors at the same time including 3D monitors of 120Hz. It also allows SLI configurations of up to three cards simultaneously.

Analysis and conclusion:

Endurance improvement to cover the position of the GTX 680 and reduce its price to the GTX 770 price. Maybe they are not the news some of us waited for but they are very good because it not only reduces the price of a great card like the GTX 680 it also adds remarkable endurance, above all to use high resolution and good quality levels. Add the reduction of the price and the higher endurance, this great finish that offer this new graphic cards of Nvidia that not only are good examples of engineering but they also reduce the noise on both sleep and high charging levels. Its size also permits the installation in compact equipment, an advantage even though with a starting price of 470 dollarsĀ  it’s not precisely a great deal.

Review: AMD Radeon HD 7990 – The Dual-GPU to be Released

We like massive hardware. That which few can afford, but makes us dream about the benefits that we all wish for our computers. Today, AMD returns to the throne of graphics.


AMD was, with its origins in ATI, the first brand to launch a dual-GPU graphics card on a single PCB. This device, the Rage Fury Maxx was a disaster in terms of efficiency and stability. AMD has learned a lot since then, and its dual-GPU graphics are among the most efficient parallel work systems on the market. Their latest creation is the Radeon 7990 graphics card.

Technical performance:

Enormous with all capital letters. Such is the Radeon HD 7990 graphics card. AMD has united two 1GHz Radeon 7970 cards within the same PCB in a card format that attracts those who want to show off power. The card measures about 12 “long.

Months ago, some manufacturers, maybe a little restless, integrated two Radeon 7970s on a PCB so many users have been able to see how they work as a team. Now AMD launches its own reference model, enhancing communication between the two chips.

In it, we find two GPUs with a total of 6GB of GDDR5 memory that give food to 4096 shader engines with a capacity of 8.2Tflops computing power calculations in single precision and over 2Tflops in double precision. This is manufactured with the 28nm process and consists of 8.6 billion transistors.

The card features technologies that Crossfire users already enjoyed. The Zero Core technology is able to disconnect one GPU, and also significantly reduce the consumption of the other, for when we do not require the full potential of the card.

The card also supports Crossfire use of another card with a GPU, Radeon HD 7970, Radeon HD 7950 with 3GB of RAM, Radeon HD 7990, or others. This allows for adding up to 4 GPUs per system on only two cards thanks to AMD’s Crossfire.

Format, design and connectivity:

The card is awesome. Large, over 12 “long, dual slots of course, a large sink and powered by three 92mm fans. Among dual-GPU graphics cards, is that AMD cards have always enjoyed powerful turbines and steam chambers.

The new design allows for direct cooling of the two GPUs, in fact they are now further apart than in other designs, allowing less heat saturation between the two chips. The triple fan design allows less noise than previous designs, but is not without disadvantages. One is having three mechanical parts that can fail, and the air is expelled out of the PC and turbine designs so we have to enhance the removal and / or air into our PC.

Four 1.2 connectors with a mini Displayport connector and dual-link DVI connector panel crown the Radeon HD 7990. With this card’s connective ability to connect up to 5 HD screens or 4k monitors, if you are lucky enough to afford one.

The card requires trained boxes for their size, slightly larger than a Radeon 7970 or a Geforce Titan and also requires a considerable power source. My recommendation is a minimum of 750W for one of these cards, with consumption close to 400w (requires two eight pin connectors with 150w per head) and not less than 1000w if you plan to mount two of these in your PC.

Crossfire enhanced and more:

AMD has done a good job for the system to take full advantage of the processing power of both GPUs. They spared no communication, riding a “bridge” with a surprising capacity of 48 lines PCI Express 3.0 capable of generating up to 96 GB / s of bandwidth. This is almost 3 times faster than the card that communicates, which has the same interface with the PC. This ensures that internally we can take advantage of both GPU with no bottlenecks in the internal communication between the two. Remember that this card uses Crossfire internally and therefore the frame buffer must share the same information between the two GPUs.

The card also maintains Crossfire connectivity, as we had some clues of before, and we ourselves have been able to test with our reference Radeon 7970. As always, AMD has the most open parallel system and it doesn’t hiccup when put to work all share our architecture and GPU while setting frame buffer size.

Of course, the card supports the latest graphics technologies within, eg. DirectX 11.1 that was introduced with Windows 8, but AMD also includes with it a set of eight very recent games (Bioshock Infinite, Dragon Blood Far cry 3, Crysis 3, Tomb Raider, Far Cry 3, Hitman Absolution, Sleeping Dogs and Deus EX Human Revolution), all or nearly all DirectX 11, with which to enjoy the stunning performance of this card.

Just as Crysis 3 in our test team was moving in a 2560×1440 ultra quality to over 70FPS long as 2x FSAA would be spared.

No doubt, if you want the most powerful graphics card on the market, this is definitely the Radeon HD 7990. It’s fast, it’s massive and expensive. It has everything to meet modern standards of graphics, but no doubt the trend of prices makes accessing the graphics restricted, and even more so in these times, it is a matter of the few. Superior in almost all our tests, the GeForce GTX 690, also a dual GPU, as well as the Titan. If we have 2000 Euros, two Titan SLI or two Radeon 7990 cards could be purchased, notwithstanding the final consumption.

Analysis and conclusion:

Well, AMD certainly takes the lead with this dual-GPU graphics card. It’s massive, expensive, and is the fastest card you can find on the market. For 919 euros, it’s yours and it includes eight great games to be enjoyed including the magnificent “Bioshock Infinite”, which takes full advantage of potential of this graphics card, in addition to offering a story that lives up to the first installment of this game. AMD regain the performance crown with a graphics card that we wanted to be more economical, but is definitely more than competitive within its high price range.
