People who really like to play computer games have always said that you should choose desktop computers. This is because they are easy to upgrade and they have extremely powerful components. But then again, if you need a computer that has great mobility, then there are still great alternatives. Intel has Core i7 processors that are great for people who like to play computer games. In addition, it has the top notch GPU from ATI or Nvidia and a minimum of 8 GB RAM. In addition, it almost has a terabyte amount of storage. You won’t be disappointed for playing video games on a high-end gaming laptop. Here we will recommend you best gaming laptop of 2014:
What does the best gaming laptop 2014 have?
- Processor - You must get the best CPU available. Presently, Intel has an i7 that is believed to be the best and it is better than the AMD.
- GPU - A majority of laptops are available with a built in GPU and a bit of shared RAM. You must get a top choice that has the best discrete GPU with a minimum of 2 GB of dedicated RAM. Even better would be to get 4 GB of video memory. And current high-end gaming laptops always features GTX 980M, GTX 970M GPU.
- RAM: You will need a minimum of 8GB of RAM. This amount should ideally be 16 GB.
- Battery life: When it comes to playing computer games, it will practically use up all of your battery life. This means that you always have to be in the same proximity as your light socket. However, you might be able to play two hours worth of games without the use of a jack. I think this is not very important, since most of time we playing games will using of a jack.
- Speakers:You will need great audio when playing computer games. The most up to date games have awesome sound capability. So, you might want to consider getting a laptop that has a soundcard or preinstalled chip with 5.1 Digital Dolby Live Surround Sound. - Screen: The best resolution for a gaming laptop is 1920 x 1080 pixels and the screen size for a gaming laptop should be a least a 15.6”. Do you want a large size that will make it easier to see the game? Or, do you want a laptop that is not as heavy so that you can carry it around more often? This is a decision that only you can make, so you might have to find a laptop that is somewhere in the middle.
The best: ASUS ROG G751JY-DH71 Gaming Laptop
More powerful gaming laptops are now here. One of the first notebooks to feature the new Maxwell GTX 900 series GPU from Nvidia is the ASUS G751JY-DH71. This new GPU has narrowed significantly the performance gap between desktop and laptop graphics.
The high-performance graphics card is not all the new ASUS has to offer. Additionally, the laptop has a new design that is almost sexy; the display screen is 17.3 inches and very bright, and as an added benefit, transfer times are extremely fast. This new notebook from ASUS brings in a new performance level for gaming notebooks.
Let’s start with the cover, which displays one of the most visible changes of this G751. Indeed, the cover is now partially hidden under a brushed aluminum top. In its center, the brand ASUS is noticeable with the traditional ROG logo backlit in red once the machine is switched on. You will either love or hate this aluminum finish, but it contributes to change the look of the G751. The remainder of the cover is in a new material which is not the same softouch as the one used for ASUS G750JZ. It is a matte black coating with a very soft touch which distinctive feature is that it leaves fingermarks only occasionally. On top of that, this material seems to be resistant and easy to maintain, which makes it a key point of this new version.
Regarding connectivity, on the right side, there are three 3.5mm audio jacks , one for headphones , another one for the microphone and finally an optical output. Then, two 3.0 USB ports, a Thunderbolt port, an HDMI output, another VGA output, and finally a plug for the power cord.
On the left edge, there is a SD card reader , a Blu-Ray reader and burner and two 3.0 USB ports.
The back panel is traditionally elaborate on ASUS series ROG G75x , and this G751 is no exception to the rule. There, we find the taut lines and two large hot air outlet grids. This time, the manufacturer has decided to paint them red to add a gamer side. In the center, a brushed aluminum back extends the cover. So either love it or hate it but, the implementation is particularly polished and the finish is excellent .
This G751 incorporates lines of its predecessors while sharpening slightly to about 1 cm on the upper half of the PC. On our scale, its weight dropped from 4.8kg for the G750 JZ to 4.16kg for the new G751 .
At the opening, the central double hinge has a good resistance: it is firm and tight-fitted. It is responsible for supporting the one centimeter thick screen which frames are made from the same material as the cover and the palmrest.
The screen, an IPS type, 17.3" 1080P 16: 9 has, we must admit, caught our attention. This new generation of G75x, is the first to integrate a 17 inch IPS slab. The strengths of these slabs are known: wide angles of vision without image deterioration, more intense colors and higher contrast. These qualities are logically found on the screen chosen by ASUS in this G751. In multimedia, gaming or office, this screen has left us a very good impression. This is a strength of this product that should delight those for whom the screen quality is important.
The keyboard part, still a chicklet type, has been revised and now features black keys in red font. Not surprisingly, the keyboard is red backlit, its intensity is adjustable, but you will not have any other choices of colors. The layout of the keys is good, the 17 " chassis allows for a good spacing while integrating a real numerical keypad. The arrows keypad is unobstructed for those who like to use Ingame; for others who use the WASD keys, ASUS has coated them with a red border on their edges to easily distinguish them. Keyboard touch and keystroke have appeared pretty good to us, the keys were missing maybe just a little bit of firmness, but it is all a matter of preference. The coating used is very pleasant to the touch. It should allow easy maintenance. A word on the rigidity of the keyboard, and more broadly of the palmrest, which is very good; it does not bend an inch.
Overall, this revision decided by ASUS is rather to our liking. The all set, matte black with red accents, brings a certain aesthetic , but relatively plain. There is only a small drawback, the keys backlight . Despite the possibility of adjusting the intensity, it turned out a little intensity was missing.
A Look at Performance:
Processor performance rarely limits modern games. The slight benefit that may be provided by the Core i7-4860HQ is not worth the extra $500, and 24 GB of RAM is rarely needed for any of the modern games you will be using. The7-Zip score of 18,873 produced by ASUS was quite impressive when compared to other competitors. The MSI GT60 Dominator Pro and the AVADirect Clevo P157SM-A both scored a little lower at 18,695, and 18,557 respectively. However, the EON17-S from Origin performs a little better with results of 21,857. Using Geekbench, we tested the system for core performance. The system achieved a single-core score of 3,140. The multi-core mark was 11,989. Even though these results are slightly below the very best, they are still impressive and more than adequate for modern games.
The G751JY has two hard drives as opposed to the single hard drive of most systems. A solid-state drive from Samsung of 256 GB provides spectacular speed, while bulk storage is handled by a 1 TB mechanical drive. We found the SSD to be extremely fast, with an average read speed score of 609 MB per second in HDTune. We were also impressed with the less than 1 millisecond average access time. We found the mechanical drive to be considerably slower, with read speeds of only 111.8MB/s; still for a drive of this size, these are pretty good results.
The Nvidia GeForce GTX 980M is what really makes this laptop stand out in regards to hardware. Nvidia launched the Nvidia GeForce GTX 980 four desktop computers about a month ago, and the GTX 980M in this notebook gives approximately 75% of that performance. The new 980M out performs the GTX 880M from the previous generation by wide margin. This results in the ASUS notebook with the new 980M dominating, as far as graphics are concerned, all other gaming notebooks that we have previously reviewed.
This is no small feat. The new GPU has provided a major performance leap forward. Just to be fair, it is possible for the competition to use the GTX 980M as well; if not now, sometime in the near future. However, it should be noted that this does not take anything away from this laptop’s record-breaking scores. If you are a gamer who likes to play with all possible details maxed out, the G751JY is an excellent choice for you.
The ASUS G751JY has positioned itself as a new gaming laptop to be beat. The $2,499 notebook, in many ways, is right on target. With this vivid and bright 17.3 inch display, exceptionally fast SSD, and powerful graphics, it delivers everything you want. All in all, the ASUS G751JY is an excellent choice if you are looking to be introduced to the new super-powered gaming notebooks now on the market.

These six machines are currently the most outstanding gaming laptops, which are equipped with very high-end configurations, especially the Asus RoG G751JY-DH71 and MSI GT72 PRO-211. Both feature the most powerful mobile graphics card – the GTX 980m. The choice between the GT72 and the G751 is difficult. Both are excellent and have unique and exciting features.
The Asus has a more stunning appearance, a very good IPS screen, larger SSD capacity and RAM memory, while MSI carries the GeForce GTX 980M with 8GB GDDR5, compared to Asus’ 4GB VRAM.
ASUS has a more stunning appearance, very good IPS screen, larger capacity of SSD and ram memory, while MSI carrying the GeForce GTX 980M with 8GB GDDR5 vs 4GB VRAM of ASUS.
But there are two reasons I prefer it over the Asus and feel it comes with a better overall performance. The first thing is its thermal performance, which is very important for a gaming laptop. The Asus G751 has the best cooling system for any laptop I have seen. MSI, despite its improved cooling system, remains inferior. Let’s take a look at a test that came from LaptopMag.
For ASUS G751:
For MSI GT72:
As can be seen, when playing Shadow of Mordor, the maximum temperature of the MSI GT72 is about 8 degrees higher than that of the ASUS G751.
Secondly, despite the attraction of the GTX 980’s 8GB VRAM, as far as I know, other than Shadow of Mordor, currently no games need more than 3GB of VRAM when playing. That means you’ll get the same experience with the 4GB VRAM version. However, for games that may appear in the future, perhaps the MSI GT72 will become necessary.
In addition to the graphics performance, the MSI also has other advantages. According to ComputerShopper Reviews, MSI’s Dynaudio speakers have slightly better audio performance than Asus’s "Bass Eye" subwoofer. The GT720 also has a customizable backlit keyboard which is some gamers appreciate.
In fact, the above recommended ASUS G751 and MSI GT72 are not their most high-end models. Each company has more "fever" models, such as the Asus RoG G751JY-DH72X, carrying the i7-4860HQ processor, 32GB of memory and up to 512GB SSD, but its GTX 980M GPU still only has 4GB VRAM, which may disappoint some people. And MSI’s GT72 DOMINATOR Pro-445 model uses a more perverted i7-4980HQ processor. Despite the nice-looking component, I’m not sure how many people really need such a “fever” configuration?
While above I also recommend some cheaper models that feature the GTX 970M and the king of last generation mobile GPU, the GTX 880M, it can be said that these cards are fully able to meet the needs to smoothly play most current high-end games at high resolutions. The following test from NotebookCheck more intuitively shows the performance of these cards:
